Ever been so exhausted from work that you have no patience or energy to be with your loved ones?
Felt like quitting the job you trained so hard for and love because it’s just too much?
Constantly thinking about work rather than being present in the moment?
That’s how I felt from the age of 22 to 30. In jobs that wanted more and more from me even though I was giving everything I had.
I started my working life as a secondary PE teacher where I became deputy head and head of department in 3 years. My dream job soon turned sour as the workload and expectations increased. I was exhausted, I had no energy to do the things I enjoyed or be present for those I love. I was poorly every holiday because I was burnt out. I didn’t feel like I was good enough, my mental and physical health suffered immensely.
After 5 years, I left the profession with a heavy heart but I knew I had to put myself first.
I had no idea want I wanted to do next. A sensible stepping stone was to become a primary PE coach. I went to local primary schools and taught PE to all ages. This was great but I worked for a company that was not well established and I ended up threatening to take them to small claims court for not paying my wages for 2 months.
A very stressful time and I ended up in debt.
I needed a financially stable job that would pay the bills monthly, no stress. I got a job in retail where I worked my way up to Store Manager within 2 years.
Like teaching, the expectations put on one human being was extraordinary, coupled with not truly being happy in the job and that led to me relying on alcohol and cigarettes and once again my mental and physical health suffered.
My best friend died from Leukaemia February 2017 whilst I was in this role and that pushed me over the edge. I lost all control of myself and my environment and had a breakdown.
And then in July 2017 I made a decision that would change my life and years later I am still on that journey.
I have been knocked back again and again but I am still standing and it has all been through developing my mindset.
Now I run my own business that has heaps of expectations and stress, but the difference now is I have tools and techniques to see the world differently. I know they work because I am proof.
I am now living the life I dreamed of, excited for Monday to come, switching off from work when on holiday, I have time to look after my health and spend time with those I love.
I have a healthy work-life balance all through developing my mindset.
